Dr Heather McLaughlin
Biography
I study the shoot apical meristem- a cluster of stem cells at the tip of every plant, which gives rise to all aerial organs- the leaves, flowers and fruits. My work focuses on how hormones influence the size of this stem cell niche in Arabidopsis thaliana, a common weed related to cabbages, wild mustard and oilseed rape.
I have recently started on a new BBSRC-funded project as researcher co-lead with Professor Henrik Jönsson (Sainsbury Laboratory at Cambridge University), which aims to identify novel regulators of meristem size, allowing us to understand what makes plants more or less productive. Within this project we work as an interdisciplinary team, combining confocal microscopy experiments, computational image analysis and mathematical modelling to understand the wiring of the gene regulatory networks responsible for stem cell regulation.
